Switching off from work after a busy day or week can be particularly challenging at times but so important to do. Fully switching off helps prevent burnout, helps recharge, and reenergise, improves your creativity and ability to problem solve, improves your mental health and helps with relationships and productivity also.
With that in mind, here are 7 ways to help you switch off so you can enjoy your evening or weekend:
1) Create a To-Do List for the Next Week: Before you finish for the week, write down your tasks and priorities for the next week. This helps you mentally offload work-related thoughts, knowing you have a plan in place.
2) Practice Gratitude: Reflect on the positive aspects of your day and express gratitude for them. Focusing on the good moments can help you let go of work.
3) Socialise:Spend quality time with friends or family, either in person or through a video call. Engaging in conversations and activities with loved ones can shift your focus away from work.
4) Physical Activity: Engage in a workout, go for a walk, or do some yoga. Physical activity releases endorphins, which can improve your mood and help you shift your focus.
5) Listen to Music or a Podcast: Enjoy your favourite music or listen to an entertaining podcast that isn't related to your field of work.
6) Engage in a Hobby: Spend time doing something you're passionate about, whether it's painting, playing a musical instrument, gardening, or cooking. Hobbies provide a healthy distraction.
7) Mindfulness or Meditation: Practice mindfulness or meditation to ground yourself in the present moment. This can reduce stress and prevent your mind from wandering back to work.
What may work one day may not another day so it’s good to change things up and try different things to help you switch off. If there’s anything else you would add or if you tried one of the above and find it particularly helpful, I’d love to hear it below.
